Melbourne Water and Wyndham City are undertaking a municipal-wide flood mapping project. This will provide up-to-date information on the extent of flooding across Wyndham.

The information gathered from this initial engagement will be one source of information that goes into the flood mapping project to help build a resilient City and to facilitate robust planning for the future.

Flooding is a natural part of the weather cycle and life in Melbourne, but it can have a big impact on our way of life. That's why we aim to minimise the risk to people, property and infrastructure.

Flash flooding

Flash flooding in Victoria is defined as flooding that occurs within six hours of the start of the rain that caused it and can happen after a short burst of heavy rain, such as a thunderstorm. It can also be characterised by rapid rises in water levels in urban areas if drainage systems can’t cope and tends to affect a localised area.

Riverine flooding

Riverine flooding is where rivers and creeks break their banks and water covers the surrounding land. Riverine flooding is typically slower in nature than flash flooding or other flooding issues relating to drainage. It also typically lasts longer, with the potential to cut off roads for hours or days. This is of particular concern when it comes to planning for future urban growth around these waterways. As much of Wyndham is at the bottom of many waterway catchments, river flood peaks are often reached days after the rainfall has occurred in the upper catchment areas.

Wyndham, being a very large municipality, contains a number of significant rivers and creeks, and the majority of known hotspots are categorised as riverine flooding. Flooding is known to occur at road crossings, including Princes Freeway which when flooded can cut off traffic for several hours.
