December Community Update

4 December 2023

Construction is progressing

We’re getting close to the finish line for the new Truganina Community Centre (interim name), with works on track for completion in early 2024.

We listened to your feedback during the design stages and Traditional Artist Lisa Waup has created an image that will be installed as part of the façade of the building that reflects a coming together of different groups, ideas and experiences as shared throughout the project.

We’re looking forward to showing you the finished product!

The centre will open with a staged delivery of services, starting with a library lounge, maternal and child health and community spaces for programs, events and activities in 2024, followed by three and four-year-old kindergarten in 2025.

What's in a name?

The centre is poised to be officially named Truganina Community Centre following an extensive community engagement process.

In June this year, we asked the community to pick from one of four themes – Traditional Owner recognition, gender equality, linking the name to a place, or commemoration – to guide the name selection for this centre.

In August, we then asked the community to vote on their preferred name based on suggestions made by the community during the first round of consultation that were compliant with Geographic Naming Victoria guidelines.

The 30-day public notice period regarding the naming of the centre is now complete and a final report will be presented at the December Council meeting before the name is submitted to Geographic Names Victoria for approval and registration.

A big thank you to everyone who had their say during this process.

Next Steps

As we get closer to opening the centre, the next phase of community engagement will focus on programming and services to find out what programs, activities and services you’d like to see.

We will be in touch in early 2024 with further community engagement opportunities for this project – stay tuned for more ways that you can get involved.

Your feedback remains an integral part of this project and has helped influence all facets of the centre, including the overall project scope and vision, design and layout of the building and the naming of the centre.
