A new set of Design Principles to guide our new community spaces

As Wyndham continues to grow, we will need more and more facilities to meet the needs of our community. We always aim to create spaces and offer services that help everyone in the community to be healthy and happy. Building design plays a big role in making sure you have a great experience and get the services you need.

Based on community feedback, we've created new Design Principles and Statements to help shape new community spaces including youth services, kindergartens, community centres, arts facilities and libraries.

We want your final feedback on these Principles and Statements to make sure we've got them right and to help us keep providing great places and spaces for the community.

Design Principles

Our three new Design Principles will shape the design of new community spaces across Wyndham.
  • Accessible & Inclusive

Our buildings aim to be places that are welcoming to all and able to be used by people of all abilities.

  • Functional & Flexible

Our buildings aim to be places that can adapt to our community’s needs.

  • Sustainable & Innovative

Our buildings aim to be places that will support Wyndham City’s sustainability goals and will be influenced by forward thinking and best practice.

Design Principles and Statements

Our buildings aim to be places that are welcoming to all and able to be used by people of all abilities. We aim to have:

  • Design that considers First Nations heritage, culture, history, and the natural environment of the area.
  • Design that creates a sense of place and belonging, and includes public art to enhance community identity, vibrancy and inclusion.
  • Opportunities to come together where information is made accessible, inclusive and representative of community.
  • Design that considers the broader elements of place, space and service connectivity.

Our buildings aim to be places that can adapt to our community’s needs.

  • Design that encourages a place of gathering and coming together for formal and/or informal connections.
  • Functional designs that maximise use and participation.
  • Indoor and outdoor spaces that are well connected, there is a clear signage and way finding, and there is appropriate acoustic and lighting treatments.
  • A good mix of spaces that are adaptable, flexible and can change over time.
  • Design that is modest yet reflects the intended purpose for community use and community needs.

Our buildings aim to be places that will support Wyndham City’s sustainability goals and will be influenced by forward thinking and best practice. We aim to have:

  • Design that considers community aspirations, needs and evidence with affordability and sustainability in the short, medium and long term.
