We're developing a new Heritage Network Strategy to help us recognise and celebrate heritage places in Truganina and Tarneit.

Truganina and Tarneit hold a rich history spanning tens of thousands of years, shaped by the enduring presence and traditions of the Bunurong peoples. The area’s cultural landscapes and environmental histories remain significant to both First Peoples and the broader community.

Since the mid-19th century, the area has seen agricultural settlement and community growth, evolving into what is now known as the suburbs of Truganina and Tarneit. This area includes a network or diverse heritage sites including buildings, dry stone walls, archaeological sites, and environmentally important locations. These places not only reflect the area's agricultural past but also contribute to its cultural landscape.

As Wyndham continues to grow, there's a need to manage development while preserving these important heritage assets. By creating the Truganina Heritage Network Strategy, we can make sure these sites continue to define our community's identity and character for generations to come.

What area will the Strategy focus on?

The Strategy will focus on the Skeleton Creek and Dry Creek corridors and Dohertys Road, stretching towards Woods Road in the east. While there aren’t strict boundaries, the area generally covers Truganina and parts of eastern Tarneit. A number of places identified with heritage values are shown on the map below.

What will the Strategy do?

The final strategy will include historical and cultural themes and stories, ideas for sharing this heritage (such as signs, trails, and digital media), and guidance on how key heritage places should be developed.

How to get involved

To help draft the Strategy, share your feedback below on:

  • How you would like to see Truganina’s heritage celebrated, and what elements of its history should be better highlighted.
  • Do you have any memories or stories associated with the area, and what is important to you about its history?

You can also directly share your feedback via email to Jack Willett, Senior Planner Heritage via jack.willett@wyndham.vic.gov.au.
