Our Draft Road Management Plan outlines how we manage local roads and footpaths in Wyndham

To help finalise the Plan, we want you to share your feedback on the draft to let us know what you think. You can read the Draft here before your share your feedback.

This is a Public Exhibition process to make sure the Plan is clear and that we have not missed anything. Your feedback will be used to finalise the Plan before being presented back to Council in October for adoption.

Project background

We are asking for community feedback on the Draft Road Management Plan 2025 (RMP), which guides how we manage our network of roadways, pathways and road related infrastructure, including how they are maintained and repaired.

After completing a review of the existing RMP, we've drafted an updated version which is now ready for community feedback.

  • The plan aims to:

    • help provide a safe and efficient road network for our community
    • set the standards for inspections, maintenance and repairs of roads
    • consider objectives, community expectations and available funding
  • The plan is not about:

    • State Government roads, including freeways and arterial roads (these include Wyndham roads like Ballan Road, Sayers Road and Derrimut Road)
    • complaints about a particular section of road or footpath
    • building new roads or footpaths
    • speed limits
    • parking

What has changed since the last Plan?

After reviewing the existing Plan, we identified three areas for improvement.

Footpath Rectification Process

We currently fix footpath defects over 20mm. Severity determines the process.

Severe defects (category A) get temporary fixes within 15 or 20 days and are scheduled for permanent repairs. Less severe (category B) defects are scheduled for permanent repairs only.

The current plan is unclear and can confuse residents. To clarify and improve understanding, we suggest updating the wording with clear processes for category A and category B defects.

Condition Survey Frequency

The updated plan recommends changing the condition survey cycle for roads, bridges, and culverts from every 3 years to every 4 years.

Wyndham’s Asset Plan shows 90% of transport assets are in excellent condition, and this change allows Council to maintain the condition of these assets while saving 25% in survey costs.

Inspection Timeframes

Inspections are currently done by maintenance zones, either weekly or monthly, depending on how often they're needed.

This is efficient but can cause small timing differences. To allow more flexibility and stay compliant, it’s proposed to slightly extend the official inspection timeframes by 1 to 2 months.
