The trial is now ending

Thank you to everyone who shared their thoughts on the project. We are currently reviewing your feedback to assist our evaluation.

We are now ending the trial and have commenced removing the pop up shared zone.

During 2020 Wyndham City Council launched a ‘pop up shared zones’ trial on Greaves Street South, Melanie Drive and Tesron Court. This trial aimed to support walking, cycling, scooting and all forms of active travel through the creation of pop-up spaces by temporarily reallocating road space along Greaves Street South and creating shared zones on Melanie Drive and Tesron Court.

Before and during the trial we sought community feedback to learn whether there is community support for this type of initiative, and we’ve gained some significant insights and learnings.

As a result, we are now ending the trial and have commenced removing the pop up shared zone. It is noted that much of this infrastructure is reusable and will be repurposed elsewhere.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all residents who contacted us and provided their feedback.

If you have any questions about the removal of the pop up trial, please contact us directly using the Who's listening tool below.

All residents in the local neighbourhood have been sent a letter to advise of the trial ending and a hardcopy of the survey to provide the opportunity to share feedback.

Next Steps - removal of temporary infrastructure and traffic management

We will remove the temporary infrastructure and traffic management along Greaves Street South, Melanie Drive and Tesron Court over a staged process. The removal of the project is scheduled to commence on 22 February 2021.

The removal of the pop up shared zone will occur in three stages.

The first stage of ending the trial will include:

  • removal of the bollards/shared zone along Greaves Street south
  • removal of temporary parking signage
  • removal of temporary on road parking bays
  • reinstatement of previous parking allocation, and
  • reversal of the changed Stop/Give Way priority at the Greaves Street and Synott Street intersection.

Stage 2 will include the removal of speed cushions and the temporary 40 kmh and 20 kmh speed signage.

Stage 3 will include the reinstatement of the bus stops along Greaves Street South and we will be working with the Department of Transport and bus operator to achieve this.

The temporary artwork will also be removed as part of the earlier stages.

We want to hear from you

The evaluation survey closed at 5pm, Friday 19 February and we are currently reviewing your feedback. Thank you to everyone who shared their thoughts.

If you have any questions about the removal of the pop up shared zone, we are available to assist. Please contact us directly via the Who's Listening tool.

About the Trial

Following analysis of feedback received through community consultation, we are now trialling a temporary pop up shared zone in the Greaves Street South area in Werribee. This location provides strong connection to Chirnside Park and the Werribee River shared path. It also aligns strongly to feedback which indicated that links to existing paths, parks and open space is important.

The key aspects of the trial are;

  1. It creates a 3km loop temporarily allocating a portion of the road space to connect the Werribee River shared path along local streets into Chirnside Park.
  2. It is clearly marked and provides a wider space for walkers, cyclists, scooters and all forms of active travel and exercise.
  3. Users of the shared zone will be able to share the road pavement, due to low traffic volumes, and safety will be supported by a temporary lowering of the speed limit to 20 km/h on Melanie Drive and Tesron Court and 40 km/h on Greaves Street South.

The pop up shared zone is temporary and is to support community wellbeing during the current pandemic when social distancing has become part of our daily lives.

We anticipate that the trial will be in place for approximately 5 months. However if social distancing is still required beyond this date then it may be extended for a further period if there is community support to retain it.

This project will use temporary and non fixed infrastructure, meaning that if elements of the project cause issues or concerns once installed, there will be ability to review and adjust if necessary.

You can find a detailed summary of the proposal in the FAQs tool, and detailed traffic management plans in the document library. The photo library provides more images of what other pop ups look like.

Wyndham City's ‘pop up shared zones’ initiative is to support active travel and exercise in a socially distanced manner through the temporary creation of local shared zones in Wyndham. You can find more information on why we are proposing pop up shared zones in the FAQs tool.

During the first phase of consultation we heard your thoughts about creating shared zones quickly and safely in an area near the Werribee River and Chirnside Park. We received strong support for the initiative with 80% of respondents stating that they either strongly support or support the project.

The majority of respondents indicated that they would use the shared zone to walk, cycle or walk the dog. We also heard that connections to open space, paths and parks are very important for this project as well as safety and clear delineation between traffic and people using the zone. Finally, there was a clear desire to see more pop up trials across the municipality.

You can find the summary report of the feedback received in phase 1 in the document library.

Following analysis of feedback received in phase 1, we then shared with you the proposed design for a temporary pop up shared zone in the Greaves Street South area in Werribee and the traffic mananement plan. This location aligns strongly to feedback which indicated that links to existing paths, parks and open space is important.

During phase 2, we wanted to know if we had missed anything with the proposed design and to work through any questions or concerns. You can find the summary of the feedback received in phase 2 in the document library.

The temporary shared zone is on the western side of Greaves Street South, in the parking and cycling lane, ensuring that the existing traffic lanes remain operational. It is also on Melanie Drive and Tesron Court meaning that users of the shared zone will be able to share the road pavement.

The image below illustrates the exact route.

This location provides a unique opportunity to connect into existing parks and path networks and also to create a loop that is approximately 3km in length through a connection with the Werribee River shared path.

The path will be clearly marked with colourful artwork and will include temporary traffic management to support safety.

For the period of the trial, access to properties will be maintained at all times, as will all two way movement on nominated streets. To support safety and provide clarity for all road users, a number of temporary changes will occur:

  1. Pop up traffic management
  2. Temporary lowering of the speed limit to support safety on Melanie Drive, Tesron Court and Greaves Street South
  3. Changed parking conditions on some sections of Greaves Street South
  4. The installation of temporary colourful markings on the road and on the footpath surface. The paint will not have a long life and will fade over time.

You can find a detailed summary of the proposed changes in the FAQs tool, and detailed traffic management plans in the document library. This includes the location of proposed traffic management (temporary speed cushions/speed humps, speed limit changes etc), clearly showing how this will impact you.

We want to work with you, and if you live on Melanie Drive, Tesron Court or Greaves Street South and have any concerns or want to clarify details regarding the traffic management, please contact us using the Who's Listening tool.
