Managing onsite wastewater for a healthier, safer community

Why does onsite wastewater management matter?

Managing wastewater properly is essential to protect public health, the environment, and our local waterways. If onsite wastewater management systems (OWMS)—such as septic tanks—are not maintained, they can leak harmful contaminants into creeks, groundwater, and soil, causing pollution, bad odors, and potential health risks.

In areas not yet connected to the sewerage system, OWMS play a vital role in keeping our community and environment safe.

Wyndham's OWMP

Under Victorian law, all councils must develop an onsite wastewater management plan (OWMP) to ensure these systems are properly maintained and managed. The purpose of our OWMP is to:

  • Protect public health and the environment by improving wastewater management in un-sewered areas.
  • Identify and reduce risks associated with wastewater issues in our community.
  • Plan for the future by ensuring sustainable, long-term wastewater management solutions.
  • Provide clear guidelines for making decisions about wastewater installations and policies.

An assessment of all Wyndham's OWMS has helped form the following focus areas for the next 5 years:

  • 1. Information & data management

Keeping accurate records for better decision making

  • 2. Education & awareness

Helping residents understand their role in wastewater management

  • 3. System improvements

Upgrading and maintaining systems for better efficiency

  • 4. Regulation & control

Ensuring onsite systems and environmental standards are maintained

  • 5. Future planning

Developing long-term strategies to meet the needs of our growing community
