Jul-Aug 2023 Minister for Education announces new school names. Find out more and stay up to date at Engage Victoria.
Overview
The Department of Education will open 14 new schools in Term 1 of 2024 and they are asking local communities to help them name them.
Delivery of 100 new schools by 2026 is ahead of schedule, with 75 new schools opening between 2019 and 2024 – ensuring every student can access a great local school and a quality education no matter where they live. We will open 14 new schools in Term 1 of 2024 and we are asking local communities to help us name them.
In line with the Victorian Government’s commitment to prioritise school names in Aboriginal languages, Traditional Owner groups have been consulted and have provided a shortlist of names for each new school. This government initiative was brought forward for the 2024 new schools’ program.
Naming a public building requires approval from relevant authorities and consideration of Aboriginal languages, alongside the guiding principles for naming a new school. You can view the guiding principles on the State Government page.
Community preferences will help shape the final decision on each school name.
